  • Visitor Visa - Language of Interview

    Hi

I have visitor visa interview for my grandmother and myself in Chennai.
We have the same appt time.

My grandmother doesn't know English. When I booked the appointment,Tamil Language dates were not available,So I gave the Language as English for my Grandmother.

Now,they have opened Tamil dates in August. We have our date in the first week of July. And I intend to fly in August if all goes right??!!

My question is,Is it necessary to change the language for my grandmother to reschedule both our appts?

I called VFS help-line,they said it's ok if any one of us is conversant in English.

Will the interviewer be very particular and take language barrier as a reason for rejection?Or can I ask for the interpreter there on the day of the interview?

    Thanks in advance
    Aishwarya

Its hard to get interpreters especialy at chennai. People's experineces varies with this issue. Some gets interpreters and some don't. Also the officer normally ask qns to those who is comfortable with the lang. I believe u can translate qns for ur grandma in case. Just ask the officer before doing so. Again its hard to predict whats feasible these days.. This is just my opinion,

gave a date 4 months later

      Hi Aishwarya,
We had taken a English date for my Mother last year Oct , my Mother know little bit of English. But at the interview time my Mother did not understand the American accent of the interviewer ,so she told him that she could not understand his language and asked for a interpreter, so he gave a date for Feb 2006 and sent her back. This was a very bad incident.Without asking any questions we had to wait for 4 months.
I basically beleive its all luck. So in your case since u can translate for your Grandmother ,i think it should be ok.But take his/her permission that u like to translate , because if u interrupt he will not like.

Aishwarya, since you know English the CO will ask you the questions. I have a similar problem (mother does'nt know English, sister knows) and I asked the consulate, they said I can take English appointment, thats what I did.
