I am expecting my parents to come to the US in April and prefer them staying here until Thanksgiving - 8 months stay. Would this be a reasonable request to the immigration officer at their port of entry? Do I need to create any additional document/letter to the officer for this purpose?

I think you get a max of 6 months and then you can extend their stay later by applying for an extension. I am not sure you can tell the officer how long you would like to stay as this might cause problems.

Well, they will be asked the purpose of the visit and the desired duration of the stay when they enter. 8 months is too long. Just say 5-6 months and they will get a stamp for 6 months. If they wish they can have it extended
      later.
