My mom arrived in the US today. Since she visited many times before, we did not think it would be a painful process this time until The DHS people told her that she overstayed for 8 days last time she visited. When I looked at her passport, it showed that she was supposed to leave on April 8, but it really looked like April 18 by hand-writing - "l" and "1" looked the same. The DHS people therefore second screened her for 2 hours, revoked her visa, but allowed her to stay until February 2017. It means she needs to reapply for her B1/2 visa if she comes to visit the US again next time.
1. Is there any way that we can appeal the visa cancellation, especially considering the fact that hand-writing April 8 looked like April 18 on her passport? She did not intend to overstay at all.
2. If she has to apply her visa through consulate process next time, would this 8-day overstay prevent her from obtaining her new visa? Or, visa officers would normally "forgive" this type of situation?
Thank you!
