Visa rejected...how to ??

Hi,

My inlaws visa got rejected on wednesday.
When asked - how long do you intend to saty in US
they replied- 8 months......hence the visa was rejected under 214(b)
So what do you suggest that they answer to this questions and possible explanation when they visit the consulate next time??
We are not able to think of any thing now.
Please let me know what shud i do now?

Never ask for more than 6 months.
