Tourist VISA - Father's Passport Expiry

Hi

I'm working in USA on a valid H-1 Visa. I'm sponsering non-immigrant visa for my parents.

I've the barcode from HDFC bank, but not yet taken the appointment.

Suppose, If i get Appt date in June'06, what should be the minimum validity required for my parent's passports ?

My father's passport expiry date is 18th Feb'07.

What i've heared:
1. Applicant's passport need to be valid for at least 6 months at the time of the VISA interview.
2. Applicant's passport need to be valid for at least 6 months after their US travel.
3. Applicant's passport need to be valid for at least 6 months before their departure from India.

Now, I take an appt. (I've to, else may not get a closer date for Interview) After this, my father extends his passport details. Can i update the same into VFS system afterwards (before actual interview) ?

Please confirm, as this is very confusing.

Fix the appt with old passport and if he renews it before the interview , just take the new one along with the old one to the consulate. Thats not a problem.
