  • spelling mistake in name while taking appointment

    Hi All,

While taking the appointment for my parents, an extra A was added to my Fathers name and unfortunately you cannot make changes on DS -156 from points 1-14. Their appointment is in another week, pls let me know if there is any way i coukld fix this.
I mailed the visa helpline guys and they replied back "that the forms should be retrived 2 days prior to the appointment and make changes" ......i really din't understand this as online u cannot do changes from points 1-14.

Moreover can someone tell me how this interview process wud take place. When do my parents need to show thier property and all remaining supporting documents to Visa officer?

Plaese reply back if someone has faced the same situation, it will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mona

My father did the same thing in his last name with one extra character. We called the vfs cutomer service but we were told we need to explain this inside the consulate.

Inside the consulate the officer asked the question about the last name almost immediatly but after my fathers explanation consular officer corrected the form himself and let my father go further.

And my dad got the visa.

      To Dahlia

Dahlia in one of the posts you mentioned

Some of the fields on DS 156 and 157 can be edited after scheduling appt. For non-editable columns, u can take printouts and fill out manually. Take this manually filled form along with other one for interview. Let the officer know abt the changes.

to edit forms after making appt, do the following:

Go to VFS site, click on 'Apply for non-immigrant Visa'. Enter ur passport and receipt details. U will see a link that says "Retrieve/Modify appln'

Has anybody tried this. Is this 100% foolproof? With VFS I am so scared to do anything. What if I lose my appointment or something? I have the DS 156 in the download details of confirmed appointment. Can I change the form here? Please reply ASAP

Thank you so much Dahlia. I just did it and the appointment is still there. Thank God! If only this website was much stable we wouldn't have to go through these heartaches, Sigh!

thank you very much for your responses. It really helped.
I just have small clarifications to make.

dahlia: When u wrote manual entry on the new form of DS-156, did u mean hand written only? Please confirm.
Moreover i have acrobat editor, in that case i can change the name on the original DS-156 form and take a printout so it will have the corrected name and the correct barcode too, should i do that?
Please let me know. Thank you, you have been very helpful.

rohitmram: when you said your father had to give an explanation, could you tell me what kind of explanation was he asked to give and what did he say.
And finally when you said OFFICER, did u mean the guys who sit at the first counter where you submit u'r DS-156 or did u mean the VISA OFFICER WHO WILL INTERVIEW?

            Thanks a lot!

gouthamsri: Thanks for getting the confirmation from Dhalia on the suggestions as that would have been my next question. :-)

And moreover i just wanted to know in what order do my parents need to keep their documents and plaese let me know what are the documents which will be taken from them on the 1st Counter, i know DS-156, DS-157 AND what else?

thanks a lot all of you. Please reply back.

            Regards,
            Mona

U can use ur acrobat editor, but mark/make the changes using red color so that the officer can easily identify the changes you have made. Pls make sure u take BOTH copies (original and the modified) while going for interview.

mmfr : The officer at the first counter ( the one who verify the documents ) asked my father about the spelling. My father explained, "I made a mistake while filling up the form. Though I realized it, I couldn't correct it. I am very sorry". This is what my father said. Fortunately, the officer was considerate and corrected the form. Then my dad was asked to proceed futher.
