Ok my friend was recently denied entry to the US at the US/Canadian border under the VWP program because they believed she didn't spend enough time in switzerland (she is a swiss citizen). They had told us that she has to stay in switzerland at least 3-6 months every year before coming back to the US. Is this true? Also she would like to come visit for 1 continuous year in the US. Can she do this under the Visitor visa or is there another similar visa she can use to accomplish this? She is not looking to live here but would like to stay in the US for only 1 year then return to switzerland. Thank you in advance.

THis is the way to do it;
To visit US for one year; she will have to apply for a visitor visa.
(She should not mention to the interviewing officer that she wishes to stay one year; she should say she wants to visit for 5-6 months).
Once she gets it, she will be granted a max stay of 6 months at entry;
but she can apply for an extension of another 6 months during her stay in US.
