  • Return Ticket for Visitor Visa

    Hi,

We did not book return ticket for my parents (they traveled from India to USA) as they were not sure will they be leaving in 3 or 5 months, airlines in India did not let them board the flight as they did not have a return ticket, we booked the ticket immediately to let them board the flight. I contacted the airlines customer care to get more details and was told that, return ticket is mandatory as per customs and borders protection, could you please some one tell me, is this new customers and borders protection rule and return ticket is mandatory as per CBP rule?

Thank you for your response in advance!!

It is not USCIS policy to mandate that arriving nonimmigrant aliens posses a return ticket. However, having a one-way ticket makes it harder for such an alien to overcome the CBP officers presumption of the aliens immigrant intent

If the border agent finds her inadmissible on that ground or any other ground, they will put her on the next flight home. As part of an agreement between foreign commercial air carriers and the United States, the transporting airline is obligated to return inadmissible aliens to their point of origin. As a policy matter, foreign air carriers will require US bound nonimmigrants to have a return ticket, to minimize their costs of fulfilling their obligation to the United States to return the alien to their origin.
