Question on Visitor Visa Sponsorship etc

I am currently in USA on H1B and myself and my wife are planning to retire & return to India soon. We have our children & grandchild here in USA. We would like to return to USA to visit them occassionally and also travel around a bit. We can have our children sponsor us or I am in a position to sponsor us ourselves. Not sure which will be better though. Any suggestions? Also does anyone know of cases of visa rejections if you apply too soon to return on Visitor Visa (say within 6 months)?

It is best if you can sponsor yourself. Else you can ask your children to sponsor you.

Since it takes advance booking several months early to get a Visa interview date in Chennai, I am thinking of making the booking while we are still here in US. Can this be be viewed disfavourably at the time of interview?
