Expired passport and exhausted visitor visa

I have family members who came to the US on visitor visa but overstayed. They are trying to go back to india but their passport has expired. I was hoping you would able to provide some expertise on this issue? How can they get a short validation on their passport to be able to leave the country and travel back to india?
I appreciate any help i can get on this matter. Thank you

If their consulate won't renew their passport, they'll likely issue them a Laissez Passer or Emergency Travel Document instead
