For the benefit of any other person who might have similar question, I learned that VFS receives passports from embassy once a day around 11:30-12:00. So if your interview was held earlier in the morning, then there is a fair chance your passport can be personally collected on same day, otherwise next day.

This is for New Delhi. I'm not aware if same or other procedure at other places.
