is a 6 months validity passport required and applied in the US for visitor visa?

Hi,
my question is a bout the 6 months passport validity when entering the US with a tourist visa.
my mother is traveling to the US on November 4th 2017, and she will stay until December 7th , 2017. her passport and visa are valid until February 2018. and she has and Algerian passport, from Algeria.
I read that the passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months after the stay in the US when we have a tourist visa. is it true ? any one had any experience with that?

Algeria is exempt country for six months passport validity.
