Thanks very much to Immihelp and all the members.
Visa was approved on May 4th 2006 at Chennai consulate. Got 10 yrs visa.
They had applied for Tamil interview but some how ended up being interviewed in English. (Think they stood in the wrong line). My dad answered in English.
Dad and Mom: Vanakkam (Hello in Tamil)
vo: Hello
vo: How many childern do you have?
Dad: Two children. Son in USA and daughter and her family in India staying with me.
vo: Why are you visiting USA?
Dad: To see son's family and tourism.
vo: How long were you working?
Dad: <Start Date> and retired on <Retired date>
vo: So you have worked for <n> years?
Dad: yes
vo: What was your job title?
Dad: <Job title> at <Government Company Name>
vo: How long is your son staying in US?
Dad: From <From Date>
vo looked at my mom and asked the next question
vo: How many times you have visited USA before?
Mom: Please ask me in Tamil.
vo (looked at my father): How many times your wife visited USA before?
My dad didn't hear the question clearly and asked the vo to repeat the question.
vo: How many times your wife visited USA before?
Dad: One time in <year>
vo: Your visa is approved. Pay the fees in the counter.
Mom and Dad: Thank you
My dad said the vo sounded very friendly and asked the questions from DS- 156 and 157. My parents asked for 5 months stay.
Some of the fine points/instructions that the officer explained to everyone before the interview...
1. You need to answer the questions looking at the vo
2. Answers need to be crisp and clear.
3. If you don't understand the question ask the vo to repeat it.
Thanks.
