My parents had visa interview today at Bombay and visa was approved. We do not know yet for how long. The reason for their visit was stated as my brother's graduation and tourism. Although the actual reason is that I am pregnant though we did not mention this anywhere. I am a post doc at univ of Minnesota and sponsorer of my parents trip. The interview was scheduled at 10 and they were called after 12. There were many couples for visitor visa interview and my parents were the 1st one to be called. The visa officer was a very nice lady and there was a gujarati interpreter standing behind the VO. The interpreter was a nice young boy (22-24 yrs). When my parents approached the window, the VO gave a nice smile and greeted 'good morning'. My parents replied. They were asked following questions through the interpreter:
1) Have you ever been to any country outside India?
Ans: No, never.
2) Whom are you going to meet in the US?
Ans: Our son.
3) What is he doing? He is working?
Ans: No, he is doing Master's and we are going to attend his convocation ceremony.
4) How many children do you have?
Ans: Three.
5) Where are they?
Ans: 2 in the US and 1 in India.
6) What is the other one in the US doing?
Ans: Working on breast cancer research.
7) What has he/she done before working?
Ans: PhD
8) Where did he/she do PhD from?
Ans: from the US
9) Which Univ in the US?
Ans: Utah
[So far my mom was answering all the questions. The following were asked to my dad]
10) What is your occupation in India?
Ans: I am a Doctor.
11) What kind of doctor are you?
Ans: General practitioner. MBBS.
12) How many people work at the clinic?
Ans: Just two. [My mom interrupted and said] One doctor and one compounder.
At this the VO asked the interpreter what does a 'compounder' mean and the interpreter said 'one who works with the doctor is called 'compounder' in India'. And she found it funny and was repeating the word 'compounder'.
My parents were told 'your visa is approved you will receive the passport tomorrow'. My mom was anxious to know for how long but she did not want to mess up so did not ask.
During the entire interview not a single document was seen or asked for by the VO.
