Duration Of Stay at Port Of Entry

Hi,

My parents are planning to come to USA next month for the first time.
I believe that their duration of stay on the I-94 is determined by the officer at POE. Do they generally grant 6 month duration of stay OR the visitor has to request 6 months? How does this work? If granted a shorter duration, can they request at all?

Also, do they have to carry all the documents (I-134, paystubs, W2, and bank statements) that they took for their visa interview?

Normally they will ask how many months u need. Ask for 4-5 months and generally they gives 6 months..

Just need the return tickets and passports :-) Keep the invitation letter just in case.
