"All nationals and citizens of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries, including New Zealand, are required to obtain a travel authorization prior to initiating travel to the United States. This requirement commenced January 12, 2009. Authorization may be obtained online through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), an internet application administered by the Department of Homeland Security."

For the visa officers, the size of your bank account doesn't matter. Some VOs don't even ask/look for bank statements during interviews. But just to be armed for the battle, best to have an amount that can cover all expenses during your intended stay, just in case you chance upon a VO who'll ask for your bank statement. You don't want them to think you will become a public charge while in the US.
Know that it will all be up to the VO, his discretion, mood, and gut instinct. Just be true to your intent; you're employed and applying as a tourist, so make your stay short.
If the outcome is not a positive one, you can always re-apply.

As proof of your purpose of visit, length of stay and intent to return, you can bring a two-way travel/flight itinerary to the interview. Throw in an approved vacation leave from your employer. The VO may or may not even ask for it, but at least you're prepared.
