GC holder traveling with expiring passport.

I am GC holder. I have to travel to India in August for a 3 week trip. My passport is going to expire in October of this year. Will there be any problem while returning to USA? I remember reading somewhere that all persons coming to USA must have at least 6 months of validity.

I could go to Indian consulate in NYC and renew passport, but I cannot afford to take a day off from my work. I could mail it for renewal, but I am worried about the delay/losing the passport in mail. This trip is important for me.
