Visa for parents

I am currently on an H1 B (first year) which expires on 14th Aug this year but have receipt from USCIS saying they have received application for extension of the visa from my employer. But I haven't received approval notice for extension of visa. My parents' visa interview in Chennai is on the 17th of Aug. I have been told that I can sponsor using the USCIS receipt. Is this worth trying?

Yes, there is no problem.

As long as you filed for extension before the expiration date of previous visa, you are in legal status.
