D156 duration & actual stay in USA

Hi,
My in laws are visting US in couple of weeks from now, if asked at POE as to for how much time do you want to stay in USA than should they say the duration that was filled in the D156 form or can they say flat 6 months and show the return ticket itenary ?

They can say whatever duration they really want to stay, up to max 6 months.
