Birth Certificate

I am sponsoring my in-laws to visit USA. I do not have my wife’s original Birth certificate but I have a photocopy of it.

Is it OK to send the photocopy of birth certificate?
Is there anything else I need to send(when original is not available)?

Original is needed. as a backup, get a notarized affidavit of birth from her parents/relatives
