Can I get affidavit of support from a friend (not relative)?

Would it jeopardize my application if it is a friend providing financial support? would it look suspicious as in boy/girl friend situation and potential stay...

what is a ballpark number for dollars the applicant should have in the bank for 6mo visitor visa self support without affidavit?

its not mandatory to have sponsorship docs but the applicant need to show a very good amount in his bank account and his strong ties in india, from this forum only i came to knowthat it would be necessary if we show 15-20lacs in bank account,we are also in the same situation no blood relations in USA,so we are sponsoring our trip.
