  • Widow mom and widow grandma got visa

I am so happy to report that my mom and my grandma got visa today in Mumbai consulate. I don't know yet, for how long the visa is valid. My mom and my grandma both are widow. I had to explain to my mom even small small things, when I was trying to prepare her for the interview, and I thought may be the interview would be too tough for her, and she will get nervous, but she gave one smart answer which I hadn't told the answer for. When they asked about my grandma(who uses a wheelchair), that what if her condition worsens in the US, my mom said, only if her condition is too bad, then we will get her traeted in the US, otherwise we will come back.
    Some of the other questions:
    1. For how long have you not seen your son?
    - 2 years
    2. Why do you want to go to US?
    - tourism and to see my son.
Rest I don't remember, I will ask her again, once she gets home, and then report back here.

      Thanks!
Actually they have wheelchairs inside the consulate, which you can use. That's what my grandma did.

I got more updates from my mom. They both got 10 year Multiple entry visa. They collected their passports the same day. They asked following additional questions.

      1 How many children?
-- my mom said, two, one son in USA and one daughter in India.
2 Who else is in your house?
-- my mom said, brother-in-law and his family, my daughter and my mother-in-law.
3 For how many years your son has been in US?
      -- 4 years.
4 What do you do for living?
      -- farming, and a shop

This website has been a great help. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations on your mom's and grand mom's visas.

I really wish the consulates change the rules to let the wheel chaired persons or old persons to apply by mail.

          - Jaya.

Congratulations and we wish your mom and grandmom a great trip to US.
You post really helped me. I was contemplating to apply for visa for my grand mom as she needs wheel chair.
Do we have any people inside consulate to handle the wheelchair?
In my case it will be only my granny who will go into the office, although she will have someone to get her to consulate.
In case if you find any info, please let me know. We really appreciate it.

I am glad, that I could be of any help. According to my mom, people inside the consulate were not helpful, and she had to push the wheelchair around all by herself. May be your granny can take her own wheelchair, and roll the wheels by herself, if its not much of a problem. They didn't ask my grandma any question. The interview was in hindi so there was an American Visa Officer and an Indian Interpreter.

I think, the best thing I did was that I prepared an application letter from my parents side explaining why they would go back, who all are in their family, their bank balance(VO doesn't have much time that they can look at all your passbooks and FDs), purpose of the trip. It was a plane application letter, and not an affidavit. I asked my mom to hand over this letter and CA's certificate first thing, when they see the VO. The VO actually read the letter and that I guess helped a lot. More precise you are, less questions they ask, and better chances of getting the visa. At the end its all God's blessings, that really helps.
