  • Open Ticket from India for Tourist Visa holder

    Hi

I paln to bring my mom who is a US tourist visa holder (entering US for the first time) from India. I thoght of getting an open ticket from India for her. When she is stamped with the entry permit at the airport, I can fix her return date and accordingly approach the travel agent for confirming the return.

My question is, will this be a problem during the immigration clearance, as they saw the passenger with no return date in the ticket or consider this as a situation without return ticket. I have no idea, whether to get two way ticket with dates or without dates.

If anyone has any idea, please share with me

    Thanks

Most airlines in India want you to specify a return date and most will change it in US for $50 -$60. I think it is safer to buy a ticket with a specified return date which you can change later. But choose the return date wisely.
Not all officers at entry look at the ticket but some may and they may stamp the duration of the stay till the return date on the ticket.

As far as I know, an open ticket is not one without a date. You will have to select a date up front and you will be allowed to change the date without penalty or minimal penalty (depends on the airlines).

I recently spoke with a travel agent and she suggested that I select 'firm' dates coz even those airlines that allow date change without penalty, you will have to mail the tickets to them and then they will issue new tickets etc. She said it is a painful process to go through date change. She also said 'air-india tickets that are being issued in India are automatically open tickets. You will select a date upfront and you can change it without penalty at a later time'. I am not sure how far this is right, so please check with your travel agent.

I bought open ticket for my MIL. It didn't come with return date. Usually it doesn't when you book from India. Rather if it's open ticket, you can't specify return date-my travel agent told as I was asking the same question you do..

Anyways, no issues at customs or immigration.. She got for 6 months at port of entry..
