I found this article but I'm not sure how inaccurate it is. It sounds like the visa is not automatically voided after denial/overstay. Can somebody confirm this?

That article is misleading.
People have posted links to this articles several times before.
What it is saying is totally different. It is saying that if you apply for your extension before the current I-94, you would be staying legally and your visa would not be void under 222(g).
If you overstay without an extension, or even if you filed an extension and it was denied, you have stayed illegally in this country even if it is a day. That is what voids visa under 222(g).
