how to apply for uk visa in this way

hi,
my friend's dad lives in the US,but he will like to visit the UK this holidays.
I will like to know whether he can use his father's bank statement to support his application as his sponsor. since his father is the one going to sponsor him ,my friend lives in Africa.Please help.
