Thumb impression instead of signature

Hi,

My father's passport has his thumb impression instead of his signature. Does this mean he needs to only put his thumb impression in all visa application documents or can he sign on D-156 etc?

Does anyone know if thumb impression is an acceptable signature as per visa officers and customs officers in USA?

If he can sign, why does he have thumb impression in the passport?

My father does not have any certificates that can be included in passport application. So while applying for passport they thought since there are no certificates, he would be considered illeterate and put a thumb impression.

If he can consistently sign the same signature, he can sign the forms.

If he is having difficult doing that, he can put thumb impressions.

did your father already have interview? did he get the visa? did VO ask any question regarding this? did he sign all the forms (like DS-156) instead of thumb sign.

My mum uses thumb impression only. She got 10 year visa. No qn asked rgd thumb impression.

I am in same situation. Did your father sign in the customs form or did he use thumb impression? Is thumb impression allowed in US customs form? Or did they ask any additional question for that? Your reply is much appreciated.
