  • Three Experiences - At US Consulate - Chenani

First of all, thanks a lot for all the senior members here for the help. Unfortunately I didn't get the visa but I can't blame the visa officer. It was solely my mistake.

Anyway just thought I will share three experiences (includes mine) at Chennai

Exp 1 - Nov 13th - Parents whos daughter is in USA.

Question form Officer : You are going to visit your daughter ?
    Ans : Yes

Question form Officer : Where is your daughter
Ans : ABC Address, XYZ State etc

Question form Officer : What were you doing ?
Ans : Working in ABC company as XYZ

Question form Officer : What are you doing now ?
Ans : Retired, and working as XYZ part time

From officer : Ok, your passports will be send by courier, you can go home now

Exp 2 - Nov 14th - Woman want to visit her bro in USA. Her husband is in Gulf and she will go to Gulf in a moth but planning a trip to US before that

Questions were - whether you visited US before (yes), what are you doing ? Where is your husband, whos is in USA and more questions on her job, home etc

    Finally - Visa rejected

    Exp 3 - Nov 14th - Myself and wife

Q : Why you are going to USA ?
A : To visit tourist places and to meet my friend

Q : How you met your friend ?
A : Through internet, as we both are in similar fields, we became friends

Q : In which field you are ? What are you doing ?
    A : Web developer (freelance)

Q : What you do ? Like what service you provide
I was trying to show him my client list and documents, but he asked me no need to show it, just tell more about the type of work, examples etc. I explained but couldn't explain it very well. I felt like, he didn't like that much.

Q : Is this your wife ? (we atteneded the interview together)
    A : Yes

Q : When you got married
    A : Dec 2005

Q : (To my wife) - What are you doing ?
A : Helping my husband, working as a web developer.

Q : How many kids you have ?
    A : No kids

Q : How you do the work ?
I was confused for a moment, he knew that and he explained his question
A : I make web programs for both internet and intranet uses, told him how I do, installation, client support etc

Q : You are doing work at home or Home Office ?
    A : Home Office

Q : How do you work ? Like what are all there in your home office ? Like servers and all
A : Explained him Office facilities, about computers, broadband connection etc

Q: So which are all countries you visited so far ?
A : Pardon me sir ? - He repeated the question.
A : No other countries yet.

Q : Who is sponsoring your trip ?
    A : Myself (self sponsored)

Q : What is your annual income ?
A : XYZ Lakhs last year, ABC (higher)this year
    Officer : WOW, thats good
    (he was like impressed)

Q : How much expense you expect for the trip ?
    A : 2-3 Lakhs

At this moment, he started typing something in his PC. That took like 5-10 minutes. I am not sure whether he was making a report based on what I said or was chatting with any higher officials as he looked at the screen and waited after completing 2-3 sentences.

Finally he took the form and I knew that our visa is rejected. He told me according to the US laws I am not qualified for teh visa. Before he put seal on passport, I told him it is just for a 3 week visit, we will be back soon. He listened to it but didn't change his decision (as expected). Marked 214B and gave passports back

What I understood from my experience - and others too

In this forum, listen to the senior members. They know things very well. Always go as per their suggestions. If they tell you like - VO may ask you this question - VO will definitely ask that question. Never ignore what they say. In my case I had to ignore some of the suggestions (I had to, not deliberately) and now I feel I was wrong.

Documents - We need to carry them, but in most cases, they never ask for it. They expect us to talk more without the help of documents. They do not like us showing / trying to show documents when it is not asked

Some think the scenario changed in visa process and it is easy. Not fully true. Comparatively easy for parents, provided they answer everything correctly. For youngsters, not at all easy. Especially B2

Dress - Better to be in formals but that is not mandatory and I saw many wearing (I am talking about youngsters) T Shirt or informal dress got visa. For parents dress does not seem to matter. Just something neat clean and comfortable

About Lady Officers - There were some threads about lady officers, should avoid them etc. does not seem to be true. Our interview time was 10, but had interview at 1.15 afternoon, so was present there in front of the interview place and I didn't see any high vol rejection at their counter.

In General - Some officers are very nice, friendly, and ask lot of questions, see docuemtns etc. Does not mean that others are rough. All seemed to be Good, only difference I saw was some take decision very quickly (may be they are more experienced) and some take more time.

Also, the officers change their counters frequently, they interchange and sometimes new officrs come quickly and the officers present there goes.
