  • Sending documents to India

    Hi,

Could you please recommend good services to deliver documents from USA to India? Also, let me know the delivery time and whether they deliver to small towns too.

    Thanks,
    ST

    Hi,

We have sent documents to my parents and in-laws in three different occasions. All the three times we used United States Postal Services (USPS). We always posted ahead of time, so always did only the Global Priority, which took about roughly a week all the three times. My parents live in a very small place. We dint have any problems.

If you have urgency, like your parents have to have the documents with in a week, you can always choose the overnight or something like that.

I have heard from friends that they have used Fed Ex. They said, it was easy to use Fed Ex, because they could keep track of the package. But this freind had sent the documents to a city (B'lore).

There is also BlueDart. But I dont know much about it.

I used Fedex. The service was good. As previous post mentioned, I could track the package and inform my parents when it was out for delivery. I used Fedex International Priority and the package reached within 4 days. Also, there is something called Fedex International Economy which takes 1 week or so...

USPS Global Guaranteed charges $35 and takes about same time (4-5 days) as FedEx Express International which charges whopping $140!! In fact, USPS international services are in collaboration with FedEx only. So I think, in effect, US Govt subsidizes FedEx service for poor people (like me!). Difference probably is between postman versus local courier delivery in India.

Peace of mind when shipping time sensitive documents - FedEx
If you have luxury of time and are not the type to lose sleep over your shipment - USPS

USPS is reliable in US but postal service in India -

                  Better to send by courier.

FedEx has partnered with BlueDart in India. You can check BlueDart web site to see where they will deliver.

I just send some documents to India through ups. It got there in 4 days. I did not want to rely on mail system in new delhi. When I checked prices for ups on line it was $46.20. I paid thru credit card. But they charged me $66. Info on their web site was not correct.

The rate on express mail websites is for Envelope - assuming weight is <= 0.5 lbs. anything over 0.5 lbs will be charged at a higher tier price.

I think Indian postal services have come a long way and considering the savings using USPS Guaranteed express delivery you may want to give it a shot.
