Tons of Thanks to this site and to all the people who are posting their valuable suggestions and experiences. I have learnt a lot from this site.
My parents got a rejection when they applied in May 06. Here's how that interview went,
VO: Looking at the 156 application, Who are you visiting in USA.
Dad: My daughter.
VO: What does she do there.
Dad: She is working.
VO: Ok, give me her passport copy.
Dad gave it to him. At that time my passport was not having a h1b stamp, it only had h4 since I got H1 after coming to US on a H4. and after getting my H1 I hadnt been to India.
VO: How is she working with out a valid work permit.
Dad: (he got tensed, didnt know what to say) He just kept quite.
VO: Doesnt she have H1.
Dad: Yes she has H1.
VO: But its not there in the passport, Show me where is it.
Dad: (Dad got tensed and said) my son-in-law is working in US, he is on H1 too. (A very bad anwser which made the VO suspect that I was working illegally, at which point he must have decided to deny the visa)
VO: Do you have any more children.
Dad: Yes, My younger daughter is living with us.
VO: Do you have a picture
Dad gave him the picture and he looked at the picture and then gave everything back, the passport also and said you can go now.
It was purely my mistake that I did not send my visa approval papers, since we thought my husband is sponsering they would not need my papers.
Anyway, They went yesterday again (nov 28th)
I had sent all the documents that I could think of. And prepared my dad to be bold in his answers. And asked him to speak loud and clear. Told him not to get so tensed. I told him, to go with, "If you want to give me a visa well and good, otherwise no problem" kind of attitude. Had also told him to ask him for a 3 months visa only, as he will be travelling in Apr and return back in July end. As my parents have been running a school for past 26 years, and that he can only come here while school is closed for summer holidays.
VO: How many children do you have.
Dad: 2 daughters.
VO: Whom are you visiting?
Dad: My eldest daughter and son-in-law
VO: what does she do?
Dad: She is a software developer
VO: What kind of visa does she have?
Dad: ( He got tensed again, he couldnt remember to say H1B, I told him when he gets tensed like that just give the documetns to the officer, he will look at them himself), so dad gave him my passport and visa approval notices.
So the officer looked at them and said,
VO: Oh she has H1B, Good.
Dad: (relieved) YES (like, yeah H1B, thats correct)
I guess the reason of last rejection was noted, and when the VO saw that I had a valid work permit, he decided to give them Visa.
VO: Ok, What does your other daughter do.
Dad: She lives with us.
VO: Is she married.
Dad: No, we have to arrange for her marraige after we come back from US.
VO: Smiled and said, What do you do.
Dad: I run a school
VO: How many staff do you have, in your school.
Dad: He couldnt understand the question and has to asked the VO to repeat numerous times, The VO repeated the question numerous times without any frustration. So Dad said x number of staff
VO: What is your income?
Dad: x is my income.
VO: Ok, do you have any property.
Dad: Yes. (Dad was taking out the property documents, for which VO Said 'Dont need to show me anything, just tell me yes or no), Dad said Yes again.
VO: ok, sir you will get your passports in a weeks time. Bye.
Thats it. I guess If our parents have all the documents needed, and answer the VO loud and clear, I think that should help a lot. Also specifying why will our parents will come back to India. In my case, my parents said they will have to arrange my sister's marraige after coming back. And also they have a school to run after they come back.
Actually I am pregnant and will be delivering in Apr. I badly wanted my mom to come at that time.
