Duration of stay with B1 visa

I've been granted a 1yr multiple entry B1/B2 visa. it expires on 26th dec'07. I'll be participating in the match for a residency in 2008 which will continue till 31st jan'08. how can i extend my stay for a couple of months more without returning home as i'll be in the middle of the interviews at the time of its expiry?
Also, I've heard that the maximum period for continuous stay with this visa is 6mths. is this true? If i join an observership after my Step 2CS in feb'07, can i stay in US and continue my experience till december?? Or will i have to return to India and go again??
