Want to visit US for 20 days--please help --urgent!!

Hi,
I wish to visit US for visiting my Fiance(whio is in US on an L1 visa) for 20 days . i am a software engineer and i am working in india. please let me know what procedure i should follow. whether i should approach an agent or is it safe to appear directly.
Will me being a software engineer be any hindrance to getting the visa?
Please help me out.
