You have to take both the govt's laws into consideration;
1. US-- you can bring in any amount , even a billion $ , but you must declare at US customs if the amount is $10k or more.
2. India -- how much you can take out of India depends on the purpose of your visit. If you are going for a casual trip the basic travel quota allowed
is $ 10k per year. If you are going for business you can take an additional
$25k/trip. For medical treatment $ 100k is the limit.If you are going as a student/worker the amount allowed can be upto $ 100k.

Make sure you have a receipt from an authorized money exchanger
for the dollars you are taking with you.
