  • Visitor's Visa For Minor Sister

    HI,

We would like to apply for visitor's visa for my sister who is still a minor. I am presently in a PhD program and my parents couldn't make it for my graduation last year. This summer my sister is graduating so we thought may be they can make it this time. We would like for my sister to come and visit us. Since, she is still a minor do parents have to accompany my sister. My mother is employed with the state govt in A.P. Is it a better idea for my mother to accompany my sister? What documents should my sister inorder to process for the visa.

    Your help is appreciated.

    Thanks

If your sister is graduating from college then she MUST definitely be over 18 years of age and that means she IS an ADULT.

To the best of my knowledge only children under the age of 14 are treated as minors by the US consulate.

And adult single women without a good job don't stand a very strong chance of her getting a tourist visa because their ties to their home country are not strong enough for them to want to return. It will be assumed that she will stay back in the US for a job or marriage.

If she does apply and get a visa please do let us know all the details.

To me it appears that there are two sisters one in USA graduating soon and the younger one in India who is a minor. But your mom can accompany her only if she is under 14. If your parents already have the visa then she will have to go alone. Prepare the documents as you would in any other case.

        Try this

        Hi,

I also had the similar case. I want to call my sister (Age 17) on tourist VISA. She had an appointment in March. The VISA was rejected because they felt that she can come here and study.

Few of the options we are tyring now are....
1> Let her come through Tours and travels (Thomson Cook, Kesari) This gives some kind of assurance to US consulate that she will be coming back.

2> You need to give letter from US Senator over here confirming your backround. This letter is tough to get unless you have some GOOD contacts

        ALL THE BEST

        Regards
        Kd

          1. She can try for an organized tour but othe organizers do not permit people to drop out of a tour once someone gets to the US and go and stay with their relatives. You see at the consulate the tour organizers are taking responsibility for the return of the tourists. Their reputation and their business is at stake. If they allow someone to visit their relatives during an organized tour and that person disappears the tour organizers will never be able to get visas for their tours again. So once people join a tour they have to travel everywhere with the tour. They cannot go your own way.

          2. You can try for a senator's letter if you are so desperate to have her here. But it is a known fact that there is no guarantee that her application will be taken seriously simply because it is accompanied by a senator's letter. Firstly, there are many senators/congress people who do not give out randomly give out such letters unless there is someone with serious health problems etc. Secondly, I know people who had such genuine problems and got senators letters but those letters were completely ignored at the consulate. Hi,

Thanks everyone for your replies and inputs. First let me get this straight. I am the older one doing PhD in U.S., and 2nd sister is the one graduating this summer (in U.S. also) and we would like to invite our younger sister aged 13 yrs (who is in India) to visit us and also to attend the graduation ceremony. Since she is 13 should my mother or someone accompany her. Since we both are students here, the only way to get her here is to invite her for the graduation which will also allow her to get to see few places. In that case what documents should she carry (younger one) to the consulate.

i would appreciate if anyone can throw an insight in this matter.
            Thanks
