    Just can't understand the system.

My mother re-applied alone for the 5th time yesterday for a B2 visa, and she was rejected, like always. The happenings of her interview process as below:

    VO : Good Morning

My mother : Good Morning to you.

Mother : If you don't mind I have something to show you. Can you please spare 5 mins?

    VO : Yes.

My mother handed over the Senator's letter that I had sent across for her to take it to her interview

VO: (After reading the letter), How many children do you have?

Mother: one daughter and one son

    VO: Where are they?

Mother: My son is on H1-B visa and stays in New Jersey and my daughter is on H-4 visa and stays in Sunnyvale, California.

VO: What does your son do and since how long is he in USA?

Mother: He is working for xxx company as xxx and is in the US since the past 10 years.

VO: What does your daughter-in-law do?

Mother : She is a housewife.

VO: What does your son-in-law and daughter do?

Mother: My son-in-law is working with xxx company as xxx and my daughter is a housewife.

VO: She takes the Senator's letter with her inside a room and asks my mother to wait. After 5 mins she comes out and says You have been called at window no.4 Please go there.

My mother initially was called at window no.8
VO: (at window no.4) For how long do you want to visit US?

    Mother : one month.

VO: Why do you want to go there?

Mother: To visit my children and see a few tourist places.

    VO:What does your husband do?

Mother: He runs a pharmacy store in Bandra, Mumbai.

VO : How much is his gross income?

    Mother : xxx amount.

VO : I am sorry. You have very strong ties in US with both your children staying there. I cannot issue you a visa.

Mother : I am going alone. My husband is not travelling with me. How am I going to stay there for any longer than one month, without my husband.

    VO: I am sorry.

I don't understand what is it that the VO's want?

Well, it's all terribly sad. I guess if there's any place we need luck then this is it.

This is also evidence of the fact that even senators have no say in this process. I only hope that the senator's letter did not work against your mother's case i.e. I wonder whether that letter was the damaging factor this time.

The only part of your mother's answers that I can be a bit critical about is when she said she wanted to visit for only a month. That bit sounds a bit unrealistic especially if your mother is a housewife. Why shouldn't she be able to stay longer than a month without her husband? Your dad can probably take care of himself for two months, right? If your father gave that answer because he had to return to take care of his business then the one month answer would be understandable. But I believe your mother would be able to stay longer - at least one month with each of her kids. It is possible that the consulate felt that she was giving them answers that the consulate might want to hear.

Anyway, it's been less than a year since you got to the US. So try again in a year or two. Hopefully their luck will change.

        Dear Smohanty,

I don't think the Senator's letter went against my mother's application, my friends parents were issued a B-2 visa in their 2nd attempt when the VO was handed the Senator's letter during their interview.

And, it was on the recommendation of my friend that I did the same. I still haven't lost hope. I would try after a couple of years, again.

        Regards,
        Nikita.

          Hi there,

I would not lose hope. My parents were denied 5 times. Ultimately, being honest is not paying- my parents too were very honest - they mentioned both daughters in US and all other details about work, health etc- seems like it just backfired.

But guess what- we are still hopeful that if we keep trying again next year we might get it. Good luck and best wishes.
