  • Sponsoring mother-in-law

    Dear all,

I am trying to sponsor my mother-in-law for a visitor's visa.

Is my original birth certificate required? Or is it that of my wife that is required? Or both?

I understand that the invitation letter needs to be written by my wife. Can my wife sponsor her mother's visa? My wife is not working but she obviously has access to my accounts.

Also, my wife has a sister who is recently married and is on H4 in the US. Is there any documentary proof needed to state that her sister is in the US? If so, what? Or is it that my mother-in-law mentions this when asked in the interview?

My wife's brother and father will not be applying for a visa due to their studies and work respectively. So, I am thinking that my mother-in-law stands a fair chance to get the visa.

Your insights will be really appreciated.

    Thanks.

The reason why some officers ask for the inviting child's bc is to make sure he/she is the child of the applying parent.(parent's name on bc).

With this logic, your wife needs to send her bc and not you. And she is the one who should send an invitation letter because she has a direct relationship with the parent and not you.

As regards sponsorship(affidavit of support I-134) if you are earning well, you should send it instead of your wife. It is quite common for people to sponsor their inlaws.

You do not need to send any document regarding your sis in law.
Your MIL merely needs to mention on the form that she is in US.
