My mother is a widowed housewife and both her children, me & my brother, are on H1Bs in the US.
She had initially applied for a visitor visa at the Mumbai consulate twice in Aug-03 which was rejected under Section 214 (B) and then again in Jan-04. The visa officer refused to ask her anything or even let her say anything in her defense. They just told her that since her 2 sons were in the US, they felt that she did not have strong ties to India which would compel her to leave the U.S. upon the completion of their authorized stay.
The probable mistake here was that we never showed or spoke about my mom's assets in india.
This past week, after a gap of 3 years, and having gone thru the FAQs listed on this forum, she went again for her visa interview. We had sent across the Affidavit of support, W2, salary statements, etc which were listed on this forum.
The visa officer asked her 4 questions:
1. how many children do you have?
2. where are they?
3. who are they working for?
4. you are all alone in India. what is the guarantee that you will come back? (spoke about property, investments, siblings in india, etc)
The visa officer barely glanced at my mom's paperwork and gave her a 10-year multiple entry visa.
I just wanted to share my own experience with the members on this forum.
Don't give up hope - be truthful and confident in whatever you say to the visa officer.
