  • At Port of Entry

    Hi,
    First of all I would like to thank this website for all the help and guidance to get the tourist Visa for my Mom.
    Now that she got her Visa, she is traveling from Delhi to JFK in June. She does not speak English and is traveling alone.My question is that what we should do so that she does not face any problem at the immigration here in JFK Airport.I had read somebody's post earlier about writing a letter on her behalf with all the details and then my mother can give it to the immigration officer. Will this help or there is some other option too.If so can anybody who has tried this letter thing send me the draft of the letter so that I have an idea on what to write.

    Thanks a ton once again to all the members who spend there valuable time to help people like us on this website by replying back and sharing there experiences.

    Naina

        naina's post is an old one and she is probably not visiting the site any more.

        here is the answer to your q;

        Going through the port of entry is a quick proces, there is a line behind you and the inspector does not have time to read any letters. All he needs to know is answers to 2 questions;
        * purpose of the trip
        * length of desired stay.

        Write in bold on a piece of paper;
        CANNOT SPEAK ENGLISH.
        COMING TO VISIT MY CHILD FOR 4 MONTHS WHO IS
        STAYING-----ADDRESS-------ON THIS VISA.
        she should also carry an invitation letter from you which she showed at the embassy, just in case.

          Thanks a lot for the reply. I was considering that my mother say as "6 months" if shes asked about how long she wants to stay. Please advise if it would better to mention as 4 months or 6 months generally if asked at the POE.

          Thanks

            4-5 months is fine. Saying 6 months sounds a bit too long. They give first time visiting parents a stay of 6 months anyway.
