Visitor Visa Maximum Length Of Stay

I keep hearing that B2 visitors can stay max of 6 months and then apply for extension if need to.

Last time when Mother-in-law visited us we believe that it was written on her I-94 that valid until one year.

Where is this 6 months limit coming from?

Can anyone provide me a link to official rule/policy?

I have never heard about 1 year before.

Max is 6 months at a time.
