B2 to H1 conversion

Hi
I am in the US currently on a B2 visa. I interviewed at a place in the US for a position on H1 visa.The employer offered me the job. I need to convert my visa from B2 to H1B. The job is not under the H1B cap.Can I get the visa done in the US itself or will I have to go to India. If so I could probably get an appointment from here. Do I need my I797 to be submitted to VFS while I apply?

Interesting - Visa's are issued by US consulates/embassies - by definition they are outside the US. You will have to apply for an interview in India (default). Else try one of the border consulates in Canada/Mexico. The risk being - if they deny you, you are then on your own to figure out a way to go back to India from Canada/Mexico.
