On one of the US visitor visa website page, it shows that the documents to be presented 5 days before the interview in Mumbai are: Valid passport copy, photograph, original DS-156, original DS-157 (if required) and original valid HDFC Bank visa fee receipt

Where as on another page it states that the mandatory docs to be submitted prior are: Valid passport copy, photograph, original DS-156, original DS-157 if applicable.

For the second one the original valid HDFC Bank visa fee receipt is not stated!!!! Hence a bit confused. I live in another state and asking my friend to do the needful for me. If so will we get the HDFC bank visa fee receipt back?

when you fill up the application the email and vfs website will tell you exactly what to send. Follow that list.
Al these websites are really helpful but are meant more as guidelines. It is always better to follow official list.
