Hi, I am Vivek currently doing my third year in a prestigious college in India. I intend to go to the US during the summer of 2008 for a summer project. I am doing this project as it is the field of my interest and to boost my credentials when I will be applying for higher studies at the US during late 2008 so that I can make it there as a graduate student during September of 2009..
I will not be paid for the project work and it cannot be considered as an exchange programme as it is only from the Professor's desk and not a recognised exchange programme. Therefore, I am ineligible to apply for the J1 visa.
Even if I get an authorised letter from the university, will I face the two year rule when I am applying for a visa for higher studies, which would be an F1 visa??
But my doubt is that if I enter on a B1 visa, which is the tourist visa, will I be allowed to take up the project?? When I went through the website, it said that I can take up to 18 hours a week of study or research work for which I wont be paid.. I can claim to the visa authorities that I am going to the US to meet my relatives (who are all over the US) and hide the fact about doing the project in the university, which is what my friend did last summer.
Please advise me..
