  • Sending Cash in mail - Urgent Help !!!

    Hi,

I sent some documents through courier (DHL) from USA to India. The documents are for helping my mom who is planning to travel from India to USA next month. With that document I sent some cash ($300) as Dollars. Later I heard that sending cash in mail is against the law in India. Now my shipment is delayed for clearance in Chennai by customs. I contacted the DHL there and they said the shipment is with customs and they will some form to my reciever's address and will have to pay some penalty.

Does anyone know what would be the penalty for this and whether they charge any case for this? How serious is sending cash by mail in India? Please respond to me as soon as possible.

    Thanks

    Illegal is illegal

They can scan the DHL envelope and if they suspect cash or any contraband item, they will open the same. They will confiscate any cash. The bigger problem in India for you is that they may cause more problems for you than just a regular penalty on the cash found in the envelope.

    May God bless you.

Send cash via any legal banking system. In worst conditions or an emergency you may request a friend/relative in India to loan you the funds for which you'll pay later.

Another option is to send a demand draft via courier.

If they charge any penalty who is responsible to pay that? The receiver or sender of the document? Since I am the sender who is in US whom they are going to send the penalty notice? If it is to receiver what will happen if the receiver didn't pay the penalty? Do they charge any case for that?

        Receiver can pay

The receiver can pay any penalty, if charged. Considering the fact that it's India, anything can happen.

For all you know, the package may go through clean and intact.

Hope it works out for you.
