  • Any problem for a visitor at port of entry if name is in collection agency?

My dad came to USA 2 years back and had to visit to the hospital for emergency visit.
At that time he does not have the medical insurance but still hospital did gave the treatment. Later I got the medical bill of 450/hr and I did not paid.
I got couple of calls/mails from collection agency to pay that amount. But I have ignored to those.
My dad is coming again to USA in next month. Is it a problem at port of entry or any where?
Could you please advise me on this.

Having a pending bill with collection agency can negatively affect the entry into United States.

Best thing is to pay prior bills. And better be careful next time. Before they come to US, consider purchasing visitors medical insurance, available for instant purchase at https://www.insubuy.com

This is somewhat related to B1/B2 visa but mostly to your situation:

More importantly, you're ruining your own credit history which takes a long time to fix- at least 7 years, if not longer! When you sponsored your father to come here, you gave an "affidavit of support" which implies that you promised to pay for whatever you mentioned on the form, I am thinking all his expenses. In essence now you've committed a fraud by letting the matter become a "public charge" (meaning that the tax-payers will have to pick up the tab of whatever you did not pay). I truly doubt if the immigration agency would take that lightly. Although- they also don't have access to your credit history since it would be unlawful unless if it is proven to be a fraud or a crime in an American court of law.

You don't want to ignore collection agencies, try to resolve it- they'd be most likely eager to work and find a solution even if what they get paid is spread over years. And NEVER ignore the IRS.. they've got what it takes to take what you've got! Truly the most powerful and best organized US agency.

        Hi ,

Did your dad have any issues at port of entry? Was he admitted?
