Friend in India wants to visit USA

Friend wants to visit USA from INDIA, and wants me to sponsor. However I am unemployed although have enough assets.Is it absolutely necessary to fill out I-134, or can I just provide bank statements, etc. to assist in the process?

He needs to sponsor himself for the trip.
