  • Appointment in Hindi

    Hi All,

I heard that for Mumbai they have interpreters all the time hence one can take an appt in english and request for an interpreter at the time of interview. Hence I took an appointment for my Mom in English hoping that when she goes for the interview in Mumbai she would be provided with an interpreter in Hindi.

Just to confirm I called the VFS office in Mumbai and they said she should take appointment in English.

I am worried. Did anyone have any experience in recent months who took an appt in English and was provided with an interpreter in Hindi in Mumbai.

    Please reply soon.

    Thanks for all the help.

I answered this question recently and many others have said this before.

Interpreters are only available for certain limited dates. There is no guarantee that one will be there on the dates that English Appointments are booked.

If your relative does NOT speak english, then do NOT book an english appointment. You MUST book an appointment in their OWN LANGUAGE.

You will need to reschedule or risk the visa being denied due to lack of communication between the VO/CO and the applicant.

If she does not know English, do NOT schedule in English. Schedule in Hindi.

        Thanks for the reply.

But there is a question and answer on the VISA FAQ that confuses me or definitely it is misleading. The question and answer is listed below.

        Q. Do I have to to request for the interpreter while taking an appointment for US consulate in Mumbai if my parents can speak only Gujarati?
Ans. US consulate in Mumbai conducts interviews in English, Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi. As they have translators for these languages on permanent staff, no need to request one while taking an appointment. When the applicant enters the VISA waiting hall at the date of interview they will be asked their language preference for the interview. Arrangements will then be made to have the proper translator at the interview.

        Thanks for the clarification.

        Regards.

When I called VFS a couple of weeks ago, I was also told that I should take an appointment in English since I haven't been able to find any date for the past almost 6 months in a regional language. I just haven't done so yet and still looking for a regional language appointment at Mumbai consulate.

What some users are saying is also what I experienced- in one of my conversations the VFS agent did suggest that I take an appointment in English and just have the visa applicant ask for a regional language translator.

Yesterday my parent's had their visa at Delhi consulate. Their visa had been denied stating that they should have taken their appointment in hindi (they took the date in English in the hope that there will be an hindi interpreter).

It was very risky, and now regretting on our decision, they took help from a travel agent to get the whole processing done.
