I'm hoping to visit the States and travel around the Country for about 6 months. I also want to bring my dog with me.

Do I need to apply for a special visa/visa extension and am I likely to encounter problems getting one - especially as I want to bring my dog with me..?

You will need to apply for a visitor (B2) visa. As far as the dog goes, unless it is a dog that helps you with a disability somehow, it see it being hard... you will need to check with your airline.
