Can I do voluntary work with a B2 visa?

Do you know if I'll be allowed to do voluntary work with a B2 tourist visa?

By voluntary I don't mean an internship or doing a job that would usually be paid but taking no money for it, I mean genuine volunteer work eg helping out with a literacy project / charity or something along those lines.

I just want to do something interesting and 'helpful' with my time while in US as I won't be allowed to work properly. Will this be allowed do you know?

No, you cannot with a B2 stamp on your I -94 card.B2 is for pleasure. But you can with B1 (business ). You will have to apply for a change of status from B2 to B1. Even then volunteering is permitted in only certain areas.
RELIGIOUS AND NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS ONLY.

In practice, it is not worth spending money for change of status only to volunteer. And , there is some danger too. If you volunteer with any organization that can potentially employ you, an immigration officer can
suspect you of receiving benefits underhand.
