duration to get the approval for extended stay

Hi all
I have applied for my parents visitors visa extension.Its almost 3 weeks after we applied for extension. since no update.

Just worried and wanted to know how long it will take to get the approval.

also will it be notified both by email and mail?
What are the ways we can check the status ? phone ?

extension decisions are notorious for their delays. They take several weeks to months. Several times they arrive after the expiry of I -94, which can create problems at future US entry, if the decision is a denial.

CAUTION:
If your I -94 is about to expire and decision has not arrived, I suggest the applicant should leave the country before the expiry of the I -94.

Reason; If your I 94 has expired and the ext decision is a denial, you are technically out of status and must leave the country immediately.
At times, leaving immediately becomes impractical, non-availablity of tickets, illness etc. A long delay in departing in such a situation can make the officer at next US entry presume you overstayed and can stop you from entering.
