Purchase roundtrip ticket for interview?

I am sponsoring my mother-in-law for a visitor's visa. They denied her initial request at her interview last month. The interview was very short and they said that she would not return. She has obtained another appointment scheduled three weeks from now.

Would it help or even be possible to book a roundtrip ticket to show that she will return to India after the visit?

You can, but what will you do if the visa is denied?

I would of course have to eat any cancellation fee or the full fare itself if Visa is not granted. That is why I am asking on this forum before I make such a move.

I'd like to understand if purchasing a roundrip ticket is a standard practice or something that a visa officer would even consider when making a decision.

It makes more sense to NOT buy a ticket until you know your visa was approved. Because bottom line is, that a return ticket does not guarantee you will return... you should focus on ties to the home country. I would not advise to purchase that ticket.
