  • Parents of USC granted visitor visa at Chennai

    Hi all,

Thanks to everyone that responded to my previous queries on visas for parents of USCs.

Thankfully, it didn't come to a drastic situation. My parents were granted a 10 year multiple entry visitor visa at Chennai last week. I prepped them for 2+ weeks and sent all the documents one can think of. But in the end, none of these documents was even looked at, not even the I-134. The interview lasted less than 5 minutes with my dad; my mom was asked no questions.

    Q. Who are you going to visit?
    A. My son

    Q. When did your son first go to the US?
    A. MM/YYYY

    Q. What does he do there?
    A. He works for X (didn't mention job title)

    Q. What did you do prior to your retirement?
    A. I worked as X in Y dept of firm Z

That's it! The visas were delivered the next day even before my parents returned home. We feel lucky to have had a pleasant experience.

It seems the VO had ample information to decide based on the DS-156. I was curious about the background checks the USCIS runs. Do they verify IRS and employment records, run an SSN trace? Do they also verify the applicants' background by working with Indian authorities? Whatever it is, it seems effective.

    Thanks again!

      Hi,

My parents get a decent pension and have strong ties to India: sizable property and funds, unmarried daughter, extended family. But since the VO didn't look at any docs, I'm not sure how/if these helped.

      IMO, the biggest positives are:
      - they didn't visit the US so far despite me being here for many years
      - I became a USC a few years ago but didn't apply for their GCs

That's probably a strong signal that they don't intend to immigrate. I also don't have many relatives currently living in the US; most went back after working here for a few years. We don't share last names, so again, I'm not sure if/how USCIS knew that we were related.

      Good luck in your efforts!
